Root Canal Treatment
Are you experiencing mouth aches?
Is this effecting your enjoyment of food?
At South Coast Dentists, we make every effort to save even the most grossly damaged or infected teeth. A root canal procedure allows us to preserve infected teeth and save them from extractions.
What is Root Canal Treatment?
According to the Australian Dental Association, a root canal procedure is performed to save an irreversibly damaged tooth and prevent its removal. A root canal is a routinely performed procedure in Australia. The University of Adelaide estimates that millions of root canal procedures are performed every year in Australia alone, saving millions of teeth that would otherwise have been extracted.
What are the Symptoms You May Need Root Canal Treatment?
If you or a loved one is experiencing any of the following symptoms, you may need root canal treatment in Nowra:
- Severe toothache that is controlled with a pain killer
- Discolouration of the affected tooth
- Pain on biting in the affected tooth
- Sensitivity to hot and cold foods and drinks
- Appearance of a small pimple around the gums
- Formation of an abscess around the affected tooth
- Swollen gums around the affected tooth
How is Root Canal Treatment Performed?
A root canal procedure is routinely performed worldwide, and is safe and pain-free. The procedure is typically completed in 2-3 sittings. However, sometimes, our general dentist Nowra may consider completing it in a single sitting (single-sitting root canal procedure).
- Clinical Examination and Treatment Planning – the first step is thoroughly examining the affected tooth and diagnosing the underlying condition. We will also look at the x-ray images of the affected tooth to ascertain the severity of the infection and prepare a customised treatment plan.
- Local Anaesthesia – to make you completely pain-free and relaxed, we will administer local anaesthesia. For patients who are extremely apprehensive or those having dental anxiety, we may consider performing the treatment under conscious sedation.
- Access Preparation and Pulp Removal – the next step is drilling a hole in the tooth to access the underlying inflamed pulp. Once the pulp chamber is opened, we will use various instruments to remove the inflamed pulp and clean the tooth’s interior, also called the root canal.
As soon as the pulp chamber is opened, pressure is released and you will feel immediate pain relief. We will place a medication in the root canal and continue the procedure at the next appointment.
- Root Canal Preparation – during the next appointment, we will use different endodontic instruments to shape the root canal in a tapering form (wider on top, narrow at the bottom). During this process, we will thoroughly clean the root canal and apply disinfectants to neutralise any harmful bacteria inside.
- Obturation – finally, we will fill the shaped root canals with an inert material. This is to prevent chances of infection in the future. Afterwards, we will place temporary filling material over the tooth and wait for a few weeks for healing.
After a few weeks, when complete healing has taken place, we will replace the temporary filling with the permanent one. We will also place a crown over the back to reinforce them, since teeth become brittle after root canal treatment.

Don't let ongoing tooth pain stop you from enjoying the good things in life. We can help.
We're here to answer your questions about root canal
Endodontic treatments — or root canal therapy — is a proactive way to restore teeth that are abscessed, dying, or have decay that reaches into the nerve chamber. And at South Coast Dentists, we’ve incorporated the most innovative techniques to ensure your comfort throughout the entire procedure!
Unlike fillings or crowns, which only restore the outer surfaces of your teeth, root canals treat your tooth from the inside. Without removing the compromised nerve tissue and sealing the hollow canal off, your tooth will be at risk for further deterioration and recurring infections.
Root canals are designed to prevent and eliminate tooth pain, not cause it. Today, it’s just as comfortable to have an endodontic treatment as it is getting a routine filling or crown.
You may experience slight pain and swelling after root canal treatment. But no need to worry; we will give you pain medication so that you don’t feel discomfort when the effect of anaesthesia wears off. You may also apply an ice pack over the affected side of the face to minimise swelling and pain.
Several factors determine the lifespan of root canals, including the type and location of the tooth, the dentist’s skill, and the severity of the underlying issue. However, the typical cost of root canal treatment in Nowra is $1000 – $1500 per tooth.
A single-sitting root canal may take around one hour. However, root canals are usually performed in 2 -3 sittings of around one hour each.
